Ultrasound Scan
An ultrasound scan (sonography) is a safe, painless imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time pictures of organs and tissues inside the body, without exposing you to radiation. A sonographer applies a conductive gel to your skin and gently moves a handheld transducer over the area being examined, while a computer instantly translates the sound waves into moving images on a screen.
Common Uses
- Monitoring pregnancy and tracking foetal development
- Investigating pain, swelling, or lumps in organs like the liver, kidneys, and thyroid
- Guiding biopsies and joint injections accurately
- Checking blood flow through Doppler ultrasound to detect clots or blockages
